The Wheel of the Year: Seasonal Blends

Welcome……Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter

Welcome……Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter I have wanted to add Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice oils for some time now. Inspiration came in the guise of the bitterly cold weather we are having here in the East. Two new blends were the result, thus completing our four season set. Though happy when they were done, I still felt something was missing. I will be adding oils in the next few months for each of the greater Sabbats in the Celtic calendar. Now for those of you not familiar with the Celtic year - a little history. The ancient Celts measured the year on a wheel, or possibly a circle or spiral. These holidays marked major turning points. Each year was then divided into four quarters: Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice- seasonal cycles of birth, death and rebirth. These (the solstices and the equinoxes) are the lesser Sabbats and mark the relationship of day to night. During the equinoxes, day and night are even; during solstice either day or night is more pronounced. Each of these quarters is bisected by holidays known as the greater Sabbats. These are:

Imbolc (February 2;Candlemas or Groundhog Day)
Beltane (May 1-May Day)
Lammas (the very beginning of autumn-August 1)
Samhain (October 31-Halloween)

As days are divided into corresponding division of light and dark, Beltane and Samhain divide the year into complementary halves of warm weather and cold weather, with Beltane marking the start of summer and Samhain the start of winter. Imbolc marks the beginning of spring and Lammas the beginning of autumn.

Ceremony allows us to take part in honoring our mother earth, her rhythms, changing season and abundant harvest. The cycles of birth, death and rebirth. The Wheel turns and we turn with it.

Winter Magick Synergy - 5ml
Winter Solstice – Yule December 21....This day is actually the shortest day and longest night of the year-a time when the light starts on its return. The tradition of the Yule log is celebrated on Winter Solstice. It is placed on the hearth where it glows for the twelve nights of the holiday season. Resonating with aromatic woods and the forest, branches of greenery (Christmas trees?) were widely used to symbolize the season. Fragrant spices and resins were added as well to honor the spirits of nature and the element of Earth.

Siberian Pine, Fir, Atlas Cedarwood, Black Spruce, Blood Orange, and Cinnamon & Clove Buds for those warm holiday evenings wrapped in Yuletide thought…

Spring Flowers Synergy - 5ml
Spring Equinox- Ostara March 21....At this equinox day and night are equally balanced. Another name for this holiday is Ostara, a name derived from the Norse fertility goddess, Eostar. The egg was her symbol and the celebration of Easter usually occurs close to the time of this Equinox. This is a time of birth, new growth, starting new projects, feeling new energy and more. A time when plants begin to burst from the earth, leaves and flowers suddenly appear in all their glorious color, enchanting us as we move from the dark winter.

Wild Bulgarian Lavender, Rose Geranium, Litsea Cubeba, Rose Otto, Jasmine Sambac and Gardenia…a flowery whisper of a blend….

Summer Wind Synergy - 5ml
Summer Solstice- Litha June 20-23….Now we come to the direct opposite of winter- this day, Midsummer’s Eve, is the longest day and shortest night of the year. During Summer Solstice, the sun is at it’s peak and the earth and her goddess are full and bursting with succulent summer fruits, heady flowers and scent filled herbs all signaling the start of harvest. From this point the days start to shorten and the sun begins to wane …

Pink Grapefruit, Bergamot, Blood Orange, Patchouli and Ylang-Ylang with a hint of Island spice…a blend overflowing with exuberance and warm and ripe with life

Autumn Glow Synergy - 5ml
Autumn Equinox- Mabon September 21....The time for the last harvest and winter preparation. We celebrate earth’s abundant harvest during this holiday. Day and night are once again equal, everything in balance. The other name for the autumn equinox, Mabon, comes from the Celtic Queen Mab of the Fairies also known as Queen Maeve, goddess of magic, charms and fertility. Now I love the legend of Queen Mab and I just have to share it with you. Maeve (Mab) means mead a substance she gave to all her male consorts. Mead represented menstrual blood and was considered the wine of woman’s wisdom. The festival of Mabon was celebrated in her honor each year at Autumn Equinox. Those wishing to be King were not endorsed unless they drank from Mabs wine, thus ensuring that the male king would be familiar with feminism and woman’s mysteries. Now don’t you just wish that were true today?

We have captured the spices and mystery of the season in this blend of cardamom, cinnamon, clove, amber blend, special spices and oakmoss…. use for ritual, celebration or just because you love the aroma!...
